Our Opportunities
Welcome to the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Scholarship Opportunities Homepage. All applicants must be citizens of the United States and must attend or plan to attend an accredited college or university in the United States. DAR chapter sponsorship is not required; however, a DAR member may be used as a reference or may assist you with your application.
To our DAR Academic Works Users :
In 2024, a new login process using a Multi Factor Authenticator (MFA) sign in was instituted by Blackbaud, the administrator of our scholarship award platform. Please follow the new login instructions carefully as they have changed. All users (new and existing) must now establish a Blackbaud ID (BBID) using a MFA before accessing the scholarship platform.
This extra login step is being taken to help secure the platform’s confidential information.
Attached is a link provided by Blackbaud to provide instructions for obtaining access to a new or existing applications or review assignments:https://kb.blackbaud.com/knowledgebase/articles/Article/203224
You will be presented with the general application after logging in. The application process is open from November 1st until January 31st at 11:59 pm (Hawaii Time) of each calendar year. Please note: You can save your application by clicking “Save and keep Editing” at the bottom of the application page. Once you have completed your application you can click “Finish and Continue” at the bottom of the page.
Below is a list of scholarship opportunities offered by the DAR Scholarship and American Indians Committees. Each scholarship opportunity has its own individual criteria and may require specific documents to be uploaded into your application. The scholarships opportunities range from nursing, medicine, occupational or physical therapy, law, business administration, English, math, chemistry, music (voice or piano only), American history, history, government, American Studies, historic preservation, horticulture, and elementary and secondary education. Two scholarships are specifically for Native American students (you must provide proof of membership in a federal or state-recognized tribe) and over twenty of the scholarships opportunities are for graduating high school students, college undergraduate students, or graduate students. Two scholarship are specifically for DAR members or DAR-descendants/dependents (you must be able to provide the DAR member’s name, national membership number, and your relationship to the DAR member).
As you prepare to begin your online scholarship application offered by DAR, please have the following documents and information ready to enter and/or upload into our system. All submitted information should be typed or computer generated. If you have uploaded a document in error, please follow the Tips for Removing a Document that can be found in the FAQ section located on the top right-hand corner of your application.
- A personal statement of 1,000 words or less setting forth the your career objectives.
- A recent copy of your high school transcript and/or college and graduate school transcripts, as applicable. Unofficial transcripts may be submitted at the time of application. However, if selected as a scholarship recipient you will be required to submit an official copy mailed/emailed to DAR. Home-schooled students must include transcripts for grade nine through final year. Applicants with GEDs should submit their GED transcript. Please note, DAR no longer requires SAT or ACT scores, or class size or class rank on your transcripts if you are a graduating high school student.
- Information required by specific scholarships such as financial need information, a letter of acceptance into a special program or a transcript stating you are in a special program like nursing or medicine, proof of tribal membership if a Native American, or special test scores if in a graduate program (such as MCAT or LSAT).
- Proof of United States citizenship; please photocopy one of the following documents: a birth certificate, naturalization papers, or the information page of your United States Passport. Cover all photographs. If listed, please blackout social security numbers.
- A ONE-PAGE document or listing of your extra-curricular activities, honors received, and scholastic achievements. The information to be uploaded should not exceed one-side of a 8 1/2 inch by 11 inch piece of paper and must include your name.
You will also be asked to request letters of recommendation from at least two people, but not more than four people. Please note, a relative may not provide a letter of recommendation.
- These individuals may include but are not limited to the following: a teacher, counselor, instructor, professor, coach, mentor, spiritual leader, administrator, co-worker, or supervisor.
- Individuals providing letters of recommendation should be able to convey your ability, work habits, integrity, character, potential, and volunteer activities. All letters of recommendation must include the date written, and the reference giver’s name, title, signature, and contact information.
- Beginning in 2024 – 2025, your letters of recommendation must be uploaded by you, directly into your application. We will no longer require your reference givers to create a Blackbaud ID to access your application to provide their recommendations.
- Please note, we are unable to accept emailed or mailed letters of recommendation on your behalf, even if from a secure and confidential third-party platform. ALL LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION MUST BE UPLOADED BY YOU, DIRECTLY INTO YOUR APPLICATION.
NSDAR Statement on the Protection of Confidential and/or Personal Information:
All confidential information concerning a person’s educational records, transcripts, or other personal sensitive information that may be collected by NSDAR, state societies or state organizations, and/or chapters, will be maintained in a manner that reasonably protects it from misuse and loss and from unauthorized access, modification, or disclosure. The purpose of collecting certain confidential educational records or other sensitive information is to enable NSDAR, state societies or state organizations, and/or chapters to fulfill their obligations as organizers, sponsors, and supporters of scholarships, contests, or other activities involving an award of funds or prizes.
NSDAR Statement on Plagiarism and Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI):
Essays and written content submitted as part of a DAR scholarship application must be the original work of the applicant. The use of a generated AI tool in composing any part of a DAR scholarship application is prohibited. Submissions may be screened with software designed to detect plagiarism and/or the use of AI. If an application is found to contain plagiarism (whether intentional or inadvertent) or to have been created using AI, or to have been written by another person(s), may be disqualified and/or will not be eligible to receive a scholarship award.
Do not wait until last the minute to complete your application. All information must be submitted by the January 31st deadline by 11:59 p.m. (Hawaii Time). NO EXCEPTIONS!
If you are locked out while attempting to log-in to your application, the system resets and unlocks after 30 minutes. Please wait the 30 minutes before attempting to log-in again.
Once the application window closes on January 31st, please note your application status may change as it goes through our judging/review process. Each eligible scholarship application is reviewed independently by three judges using a standardized rubric unique to each scholarship. Each rubric criterion has a minimum score of “0” and a maximum score of “10”. All scores in DAR Academic Works are converted to a 100-point scale regardless of the number of rubric criterions used. The judges scores are then averaged by the system, and the recipient is determined.
In closing, all applicants will receive an email notification generated from DAR Academic Works by the second week of May, whether selected as a scholarship recipient or not. The notification of congratulations or regrets will be emailed to the email address of record that was submitted in your scholarship application profile.
If selected as a recipient of a scholarship awarded by the DAR Scholarship Committee or American Indians Committee:
- You will be asked to provide an official copy of your transcripts to the Office of the Reporter General by a specified date. Official transcripts may be submitted via secure email or by mail. Your official transcripts must be received before your scholarship award can be issued.
- You will receive a scholarship acceptance form sent to your email address of record. You will be asked to complete the form and provide the physical (mailing) address of the academic institution to receive your scholarship award. Scholarship award checks are mailed directly to your academic institution, checks are never mailed directly to the scholarship recipient.
- Please note, applicants are eligible to receive only one scholarship from DAR each award cycle.
- Scholarship awards are issued and mailed in August/September for use for the Fall Semester, no exceptions. We are unable to accommodate special requests to delay the awarding of scholarships for the Spring Semester or other time-periods. In addition, recipients must be currently enrolled as a student for the scholarship award to be issued.
- Failure to provide your official transcripts and completed scholarship acceptance form by the specified date will result in the scholarship not being awarded.
If you have questions, please contact us at scholarships@nsdar.org OR contact the National Vice Chairman who is responsible for each scholarship. Their contact information can be found at: dar.org/national-society/scholarships
